Oscar Fernandes, (Member of Parliament) and former Union Cabinet Minister, is coming to Jamia Millia Islamia today at 3:00 pm, according to sources. It is understood that like earlier instances where leaders have addressed protesting students, he too will visit Gate Number 7.
For more than six days, students have been demanding restoration of students’ union on the campus that was scrapped in 2006. Oscar Fernandes is an Indian politician, a senior Indian National Congress leader and was the Union Cabinet Minister for Transport, Road and Highways and Labour and Employment, Government Of India in the UPA Government.
Jamia Vice-Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad on Monday evening appealed to the handful of students sitting on dharna asking for Students’ Union Election to call off their protest and come for talks to resolve the issue that is sub judice.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the two-day Talimi Mela to mark the 97th Foundation Day of JMI, attended by a large number of students and faculty members, Prof Ahmad, while expressing happiness over the success of the event, regretted that some students were sitting on a dharna giving a bad name to it despite being aware that the matter is in court and the university is helpless.
Stating that since the matter is pending before the Hon’ ble Delhi High Court, the university cannot take any decision as it will amount to contempt of court, he advised the students not to make it an ego issue and come for talks to resolve the matter.
He also urged senior professors to talk to the students and convince them to call off their dharna in the larger interest of the university and come for talks.
